Our largest meetings & events space, The Ballroom, is perfect for any gathering with up to 1,000 people. The Guest House also includes a 464-seat theater for presentations or ceremonies. Lisa Marie Presley passed away on Jan. 12 at 54, hours after being hospitalized following an apparent cardiac arrest. She was the only daughter of the late music legend Elvis Presley and Priscilla Presley. The last member of the Presley family to occupy Graceland mansion was Elvis’ aunt Delta, who died in 1993.

While they didn’t redecorate too much because it was so new, they did make a few changes. Elvis had a pool built out back, with a pool house that doubled as a two-car garage on the other side. They painted the wood paneled hallways, making them feel much larger than they felt before, and after a while they hung up some musically patterned wallpaper.

In 2022, the home would go up for auction through Rockhurst Auctions, with bidding starting at $25,000. Graceland is again set to return to the silver screen with the release of Priscilla, written, directed, and coproduced by Sofia Coppola. The anticipated biopic charts Priscilla Presley’s relationship with her famous husband, with Cailee Spaeny playing Priscilla and Jacob Elordi slipping into Elvis’s blue suede shoes for the role.

In the late forties, a man by the name of Robert Snowden and his business partner started to develop the area, which was in East Memphis, selling lots instead of houses. Even in the beginning, Audubon Drive was an upper-middle class, predominantly white community. Elvis Presley House is a one-story ranch style house in a residential neighborhood in Memphis, Tennessee.

To the left are two white sofas, a china cabinet and a fireplace with a mirrored wall. The painting that hangs in the room was Elvis's last Christmas present from his father, Vernon, and also displayed are photographs of Elvis's parents Vernon and Gladys, Elvis and Lisa Marie. Behind an adjoined doorway is the Music Room, framed by vivid large peacocks set in stained glass and contains a black baby grand piano and a 1950s style TV. And the third adjacent room is a bedroom that was occupied by Elvis's parents. The walls, carpet, dresser, and queen size bed are bright white with the bed draped in a velvet-looking dark purple bedspread along with an en-suite full bathroom done in pink. Presley’s family lived in Tupelo until he was 13 years old, at which point they moved to Memphis.

Dan and Bill agree that there was a social division between the old Memphis families and the new Memphis families, the latter of which the Metz family belonged to since they were not native Memphians. Dan and Bill went elsewhere — to Christian Brothers High School, a Catholic school. There was a group of girls who went to St. Mary’s, including Christine Mayer Todd and Meg Jemison Bartlett, with a neighborhood carpool to take them there.

Elvis brought his buddies to play touch football with the neighborhood boys in the front yards on his side of the street. He would pause in his play to sign autographs for the fans watching nearby. Elvis gave the kids motorcycle rides and teddy bears out of his bedroom. Once he carried an unconscious boy home to his mother after a brick fell on his head.

After a while it got so bad that a group of fathers got together and offered to buy Elvis’ house from him. Elvis got mad and said something along the lines of, no but I’ll buy all of yours. He was the only one without a mortgage and ironically he had more money than any of them. But it got so bad for Elvis’ own privacy, especially after his appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show, that he built a brick and iron wall around 1034’s front yard with a gate closing off their driveway, stationing relatives as security guards.

The porch is built into the house, but the back wall that faces east is all screened windows. The porch is made of redwood, and has a door that leads to the backyard. The following is a first person tour of 1034 Audubon Drive according to the original building plans by Howard T. Handwerker, the builder and original owner, as well as information shared with me by various members of the Handwerker family. A copy of the plans were graciously given to me by Howard’s son Dan Handwerker. In June 2022, actors Austin Butler and Tom Hanks visited the mansion and were interviewed virtually by the Good Morning America news program from the Jungle Room to talk about their biographical film Elvis.

Graceland was Elvis' final home in Memphis and is where he died in 1977. This home at 1414 Getwell was the last of the rentals for the Presley family. They lived here from September 1955 until March 1956 and reportedly paid a rent of $85 per month.

Presley rented a Palm Springs home, dubbed the “House of Tomorrow,” for a year, starting in 1966, and he honeymooned with his bride there in 1967 following their Las Vegas wedding. The house at 1350 Ladera Circle was designed by modernist architect William Krisel, and the striking 4,695-square-foot residence features curved rock-lined walls; a bat-wing roof; a sunken living room, and a pentagon-shaped pool. The Colonial Revival–style mansion was built in 1939 by Thomas and Ruth Moore, who hired Memphis architecture firm Furbringer and Ehrman to design the residence. The acreage had been owned by Ruth Moore’s ancestors, the Toof family, who named it Graceland. Presley paid $102,500 for the property (or about $1.1 million today). The mansion remains not only a tourist attraction, but a staple in pop culture.
